My constant companions, Mickey the Gypo and Stella Marie, give me reason and will to get out of bed each day. I have always loved dogs, and my family always had dogs when I was growing up, but the relationship I have with these two lovely beasts is different from any other relationship I’ve ever had.

Humans are responsible for the domestication of wolves into companion animals. At first, we put them to work, but later we realized their value as companions.

One particular dog that Sarah had selected, a “chug,” or as my daughter preferred, a “pughuahua,” was possibly the ugliest dog I had ever seen. But it was Sarah’s choice, so we went through having our home inspected, being interviewed by the rescue lady, and we met Sophie. She seemed amenable to hanging with us, so a week later we became Sophie’s forever family.

Sophie was supposed to be three when we got her, but we think they possibly underestimated her age. The vet agreed, putting her initially at 6 years old.
